Wanda’s Road to the Great British Care Awards Finals

Withens Nursing Home in Southfleet Gravesend has recently proudly supported their Nurse Wanda as she successfully made her way to the finals of the National Great British Care Awards.

In early September 2023, the Regional Finalists of the Great British Care Awards were announced. To her amazement, Wanda Tebby had been shortlisted as a finalist in the Care Assessor Award. Nominated by Withens Nursing Home’s General Manager Lee Cunningham, who highlighted the reason for Wanda’s nomination and obvious shortlisting, ‘Wanda joined the team at Withens two years ago and has been a credit to the team, Wanda comes with great experience in various roles including dementia specialist, Nursing home management and peripatetic nursing. Wanda has supported our clinical team with person centred care and person-centred care planning ensuring the care we provide is resident led.’

The next stage of the process was for Wanda to attend an interview with a panel of judges from the social care sector and then on to the awards ceremony.

The annual glittering awards evening was held on the 17th of November in the Ballroom of the Brighton Hilton Hotel. The event is a wonderful opportunity for the Social Care sector to come together and celebrate the exceptional and dedicated individuals who work in the sector.

Lee and Wanda were supported at the event with other finalists from across the RCH Care Homes Group.

As the awards section of the evening commenced, tension built as Wanda and Lee waited for the Care Assessor Award finalists to be read out, and finally the winner announced, ‘the South East Great British Care Assessor Award goes to Wanda Tebby from Withens Nursing Home!’.

The table of fellow nominees and guests erupted with cheers and applause, as Wanda went up to receive her well-deserved award.

The judges said, ‘‘Wanda’s unified approach to management is exceptional, and she clearly works hard every day to ensure that the care plans really are person-centred and personalised to each resident. Wanda has a clear understanding that it is only through continuous effort as a whole team that care plans will be truly meeting needs and wishes. Your humble approach is lovely to see – be proud of what you are achieving.’

This would now mean that Wanda would go onto the National Great British Care Awards final held in March 2024.

Wanda went through another round of interviews before attending the finals, again supported by Lee and RCH Care Homes other National finalists.

Although Wanda wasn’t announced as the National Winner, the spectacular evening is the culmination of a year’s process for the regions and other parts of the United Kingdom to come together and celebrate their achievements as reginal winners and finalists.

Wanda reflected on the experience, ‘I have really enjoyed representing Withens Nursing Home and RCH Care Homes in entering the Great British Care Awards and making it to the National Finals. I was extremely proud of winning the South East Regional Care Assessor and Care Planner award. We work as a close nit team at Withens and my award is a reflection of the whole clinical team delivering person centred care from assessment onwards.’

General Manager Lee shared his thoughts on Wanda’s journey, ‘As Wanda’s manager I am very proud of the recognition she received winning the Regional Care Assessor and Care Planner Award and reaching the finals of the National Great British Care Awards. Her recognition and the comments made the judges are truly deserved!’
