How much does living in a care home cost?

We are often asked how much living in a care home costs it is understandably one of the things that people moving into a care home are concerned about.

Across our RCH care homes, the cost of care depends on each individual’s personal care and support needs as well as whether the resident will be funded by the local authority, NHS or self-funding.

A member of our care home team will be able to give you a ‘starting from’ price, if your relative or friend has got to fund the care themselves, so you are able to get an idea of how much the weekly cost will begin from.

A pre-admission assessment is then completed by us to find out what someone’s care and support needs are before they move into the home. At this point, we will be able to confirm whether we can meet their needs and also how much the weekly fee will be.

This weekly fee may go up or down in the future, depending on whether their needs increase or decrease. If this is likely to happen, we will, of course, always discuss it with the resident and their next of kin or advocate.

In all of our care homes, our weekly fee includes the vast majority of someone’s living costs so you can rest assured with the knowledge that there won’t be any additional sizeable bills to pay.

The fee includes:

  • A fully-furnished bedroom in one of our welcoming homes
  • 24-hour care and support from our team
  • The use of all of our communal areas in the home
  • All food and drinks
  • Washing and ironing completed by our in-house laundry team
  • The daily cleaning services of our in-house domestic team
  • A full variety of daily activities including regular visiting entertainment

There are a few other items that will incur an additional cost such as a resident’s personal telephone line and call charges, satellite TV in their bedroom, services such as hairdressers, chiropody and daily newspapers, and personal care items such as shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, etc.

What happens next?

We understand you might be unsure about what to do next, uncertain about your options and where to go from here. The care sector can be confusing to navigate and, combined with a wide range of different emotions and pressure to find a solution, it can be difficult to know where to turn.

This is why we pride ourselves on being there to provide help and support to residents as well as their families, friends, and advocates.
