For the last 2 years Brentwood Care Centre have enjoyed a monthly radio request show where residents select their favourite songs and have them played in a radio show dedicated just to them thanks to the fantastic team at BHR 1287 Hospital Radio

Originally set up as a one-off event in May 2018 to mark Dementia Action week, Brentwood Care Centre teamed up with the hospital radio team who entertain patients at Basildon and Thurrock Hospital. They kindly took requests from the residents and broadcast them live on air whilst the residents listened on with a 1950s themed party.

It was such a success that it then turned into a monthly feature, and has since gone on to become a firm favourite in the social schedule at the home. Each month, residents place their requests and enjoy hearing their favourite songs being played for them either by coming together in the social lounges for a party, or from the comfort of their own rooms – after all, who doesn’t like hearing their name and a song dedicated to them, especially live on the radio!

The partnership with BHR Hospital Radio and the request show has had so many positive benefits for the home and residents: it encourages keeping them connected to their local community, and the music and memories evoked from hearing their favourite songs, often popular with everyone, has a heartening effect on all.

We get a lot of joy out of it. We all get into it and sing along, and it’s lovely to see the big smiles on people’s faces” ~ Eileen, Resident

The ongoing partnership has gone from strength to strength, and has been particularly special during the global pandemic. Residents and staff alike eagerly anticipate their show and accompanying parties each month, and some residents were able to enjoy a visit to the radio station last year, including taking to the airwaves themselves! Both the radio team and our residents are looking forward to a repeat performance once the pandemic is over.
