The Withens Nursing Home

At The Withens we believe that our home is our clients’ home too. We therefore give our residents as much freedom as possible to make their own choices about their day-to-day lives. The result is a relaxed and friendly home where family are encouraged to visit anytime and residents can relax and entertain guests.

Our Location

We have a lovely village location in Southfleet, just outside Northfleet. We’re surrounded by farmland but are close to both Gravesend town centre and the Bluewater and Lakeside shopping centres. We’re easy to reach by road, just a short distance from the motorway. There’s a regular bus service into the village centre and the village pub is close by.

Our beautifully landscaped gardens offer a delightful place to spend a sunny afternoon in peace and tranquillity with magnificent views over the rural landscapes and Kent countryside.

Accessibility

Our home is fully accessible for wheelchair users or people with a disability. The ground floor is all on one level and a lift provides access to the upper floor.

Accommodation

Our residents’ rooms are attractive and comfortable with a number of en-suite rooms available. The décor has been carefully chosen to provide both warmth and homeliness. Residents are encouraged to treat their rooms as their own and can bring in personal possessions to make the rooms even more homely. Residents can request to use the home’s phone at any time or if they prefer can bring their own mobile phone. We are looking at introducing Internet access for residents in their rooms in the future.

Our communal areas provide a comfortable, well-furnished lounge, conservatory and a dining area which boasts a splendid feature fireplace and provides a lovely meeting place for residents to relax and entertain guests. Chairs are set out in small groups so that residents can sit and chat or just relax quietly if they prefer. In warmer weather, many residents enjoy relaxing in our pretty outdoor seated areas.

We know it’s important for our residents to keep in touch with friends and relatives, so our door is always open.

Meal Times

Delicious home-cooked meals are made on the premises by our own in-house chef. Our chef can cater for all medical, health, religious and cultural requirements and can also bake celebratory cakes on request. We provide an appetising menu and encourage residents to eat and drink as much as they wish. There are always two choices every day plus snacks and drinks available throughout the day and night. Relatives and visitors are welcome to make themselves a drink in the dining room whenever they visit.

Keeping Active

At The Withens we believe that everyone is individual and this is reflected in how they like to spend their time. We therefore work hard to get to know each resident and understand what they enjoy doing. Our activities co-ordinator will sit with residents when they arrive and chat to them about their interests. Outside entertainers also visit and next year we plan to arrange excursions, with visits planned to the seaside and the theatre. Children from the village school come to the home to sing carols and the vicar from next door comes and holds communion on a monthly basis. The residents are free to walk in the grounds on their own or with a carer. Families can take their loved ones out, and enjoy meals with them or participate in entertainment at any time and we’re happy to help relatives plan family celebrations within the home.

Providing Care

We provide a consistently high standard of holistic care for our residents whilst respecting their individuality, dignity and choice. Our residents have diverse needs and the care given is designed to address their physical, mental and spiritual needs. We provide as much opportunity as possible for residents to make their own decisions. They can choose when they wish to get up or go to bed, and will be asked what they wish to wear, and are given choices at mealtimes. Each room has a nurse call bell in it so that residents can summon assistance at any time – day and night. We have a good relationship with the local GP who visits weekly, or as required. Alternatively, residents can choose to remain with their current GP if this is practical. We also have a visiting chiropodist and hairdresser. All our staff undergo a rigorous recruitment process, and on-going programme of training. Many have vast experience and have completed national vocational training. Many staff live locally and have worked at The Withens for several years.
